Ingredients:
1 cup long-grain white rice
2 cups water
1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions:
Rinse the Rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
Boil the Water: In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the salt and butter or olive oil, if using. The fat adds flavor and helps keep the grains separate.
Add the Rice: Once the water is boiling, stir in the rinsed rice. Bring the mixture back to a gentle boil.
Simmer the Rice: Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer. Cook for 18-20 minutes without lifting the lid, until all the water is absorbed.
Rest and Fluff: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 minutes. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice. Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.
